HAPPY NEW YEAR... WELCOME TO 2025??

It's not the greatest start to 2025. We are all devastated by the horrible fires in the Los Angeles area and the worries that something like this could happen here. I know of several Redwood Alumni who have lost everything. They are in our thoughts. I'm sure everyone is doing what they can to help and to make sure we are prepared in the future. The new semester has begun and the activities are in full swing. The fall saw very successful Redwood athletic teams, continued recognition for being an outstanding high school, and a busy Alumni Council selecting distinguished Redwood Alumni in Athletics and for the Avenue of Giants. According to current Redwood Principal Barnaby Payne, 40% of Redwood's 2024 seniors had a GPA of 4.0 or higher with weighted grades! No more limits to taking only one or two AP classes! If you want to know more about what's going on at your alma mater, you can follow the award winning BARK. " The Redwood Bark, the student newspaper of Redwood High School in Larkspur, won top honors at the National High School Journalism Convention in Philadelphia." Read Article Here

WE HAVE LOST TWO REDWOOD GIANTS...

Sylvia Jones passed away on December 6, 2024. Sylvia was an institution at Redwood, master English teacher, BARK advisor, AP English guru throughout the state and country. She hosted Writing Workshops and brought the Bay Area Writing Project to the campus, not only for students but also teachers. She seemed to always have a red correction pencil with her to edit mail room notices, memos, as well as student papers. Sylvia lived independently in Mill Valley until her passing. She is survived by her two children Gwyn '80 and Morgan'83, both Redwood Alumni.

Stanlee J Buchanan passed away on January 2, 2025. His cancer had returned but he continued to entertain from his bedside. He was a long time revered English teacher, tennis coach, and all-around good guy. He starred on the USF basketball teams with Bill Russell, winning two NCAA titles, and a spot in the USF Hall of Fame. He also taught Environmental Education with Chip Wray, was a RISE exchange teacher to Blandford Forum, and was often found on the local stages in musical theater. He was funny, witty, engaging and completely disorganized until the end. He was running late but took one look at 2025, and decided it was his time. He is survived by his four children: Linda, John, Greg and Laura, two stepdaughters Karin Gustafson Teague and Susannah Woerner, two grand children and two great grandchildren. SF Chronicle

PLEASE CONSIDER GIVING BACK TO REDWOOD!

As a proud Redwood alumni, we are asking you to give back to Redwood and help maintain the excellence of your alma mater for current and future generations! Your gift to the Redwood High School Foundation helps bridge the gap between state and local funding and what is actually required to provide robust innovative programs, cutting edge tools and equitable educational opportunities for ALL Redwood students.  Your generous donation will help to fund critical grants including:

  • Need-based scholarships for graduating students continuing on to higher education
  • Publishing and operations costs for the Redwood Bark student newspaper
  • New laptops for Computer Science Lab
  • And much more!

Your gift, in any amount, makes an immediate difference and will leave a lasting impact on Redwood and the students for years to come. If you would like to make donations in memory of Stan Buchanan, Sylvia Jones, Bob Sargent, or any other staff member or classmate, please do so and their families will be notified. The Foundation is no longer doing individual scholarships in honor of one person.
